Environmental Approach
Inherent energy efficiency
Eden Arc designs are inherently energy efficient structures.
They are built using closed-cell SIPs (structural insulated panels) to create a highly insulated and waterproof envelope, resulting in impressive overall U-Values.
Our standard specified UV-treated glazing combined with our signature deep canopy and optional integrated louvred sun shield, keeps heat gain to a minimum, reducing the need for mechanical cooling.
It is possible to achieve EPC A or even Passivhaus Certification by upgrading the glazing specification to a BFRC (British Fenestration Rating Council) Certified package, which incorporates triple glazing and the use of Argon gas between each pane of glass.
Hot water, heating and cooling
The inherently energy efficient design of our buildings as mentioned above, means that both heating and cooling require very low amounts of energy.
The UV treated glass, high insulation levels and a deep canopy that shades the main glass elevation ensure that the buildings remain cool in the hottest summers. However an energy efficient air conditioning system, ducted into the walls for concealed cooling, is easily specified and installed.
All Eden Arc buildings are supplied with an underfloor heating system which, given the nature of the superstructure of our products, is very clearly the most energy efficient method to distribute warmth throughout. As well as being silent, low-maintenance and visually unintrusive it is also considered the most comfortable means of heating.
Heating options
There are four main options to power the underfloor heating and hot water systems (all housed in a dedicated externally accessible plant room);
Combination gas boilers are a proven technology, cheap and reliable to install and run. However, gas is not always available and due to be phased out, whilst impacting on EPC ratings.
Electric combination boilers are also reliable and cost-effective to install, with the ability to provide heat and hot water simultaneously, but do not improve EPC ratings and can be more expensive to run.
Single-unit air-source heated water tanks are still a reasonably new innovation to heat large quantities of water. When combined with an electric boiler dedicated to the underfloor heating system, this is a cost-effective and energy-efficient alternative.
An externally mounted air-source unit will supply all of the hot water and heating required. Whilst its running costs are relatively low, it is the most complex and expensive option to install and maintain. Also the external unit is hard to hide and can be noisy, making it worthwhile only in specific circumstances.
Eden Arc has extensive knowledge of all of the options available to you and will work with you to create a package that meets your budgetary requirements, usage needs and personal preferences.
A step further...
Eden Arc has focused on future-proofing our designs and ensuring they can accommodate and exploit sustainable technologies as they develop.
All Eden Arc buildings are engineered for extra weight on the roof that allows for the easy installation of solar panels, which can be incorporated to lie flush against the eaves or sit recessed within a flat roof structure.
Whilst we have focused on the more commonly available energy sources, it is also possible to utilise both geothermal or ground-source energy if available on site.
Unfortunately living roofs do not officially change the EPC rating that our buildings can achieve. However, as well as being beautiful and great for biodiversity, they do increase the insulation and thermal efficiency and all Eden Arc buildings can easily accommodate them.
The hidden gutter systems found on all of our products can be used to harvest rain water and re-use it where suitable.
